In the final chapter of The Course of Recognition, Ricœur proposes a pacified conception of recognition, founded on mutuality rather than reciprocity, and developed through a phenomenology of the gift. Although Derrida is not cited in this chapter, the article shows how the analyses of the two philosophers resonate with each other, through a cross-play between the deconstruction and reconstruction of the gift, conducted in comparison with commercial exchange. Like Derrida, Ricœur reveals the gift as the impossible, marked by its three aporias. But unlike Derrida, he undertakes a complementary reconstructive move that brings to light the practical powers of the gift, along with the dialectic between love and justice that constitutes both its strength and its fragility.
