This article is an attempt at an imaginary dialogue between the thought of Ailton Krenak and the philosophy of Paul Ricœur. Although these two thinkers belong to different cultural spheres and seem to operate at distinct discursive levels, a comparison between them is fruitful when based on an analysis of the role each assigns to imagination in action, for while the relationship between imagination and action is exhaustively theorized by Ricœur, it is also emphasized by Krenak. However, a comparative interpretation of the meaning of this idea in the works of each of these two thinkers – insofar as imagination is embodied in works and actions are situated in the contemporary world – will reveal a profound conflict between their respective imaginaries that seems to overshadow the hermeneutic resolution of the conflict. Understanding this phenomenon requires a theoretical argument that engages in a dialectical dialogue between certain major themes in Ricœurian philosophy – such as myth, evil, and metaphor – and certain Krenakian ideas – such as ancestry, capitalism, and worldview.
