This article examines contemporary Iran through key categories of Paul Ricœur’s thought, in dialogue with Arendt, Marx, Weber, and Daryush Shayegan. By clarifying the dynamics of violence and the impasses of religious power, I interpret the Islamic Republic in terms of a reign of ideology and an eclipse of utopia,. Through a hermeneutic approach to secularization and mobilizing Shayegan’s account of the “time of distress,” I highlight the historical conditions of ongoing transformations. Finally, I foreground the decisive role of collective responsibility in the possibility of a non-repetitive liberation from political evil.
